A validated clinical decision tool for patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain was developed by physicians at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The HEART Pathway algorithm has shown potential to significantly impact patient care, with findings including a reduction in patient length of stay by 12 hours, a 14 percent decrease in costs per patient, and a MACE rate of less than 1%.

Current practices lead to significant costs associated with cardiac evaluations for chest pain patients, even though less than ten percent are diagnosed with an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The HEART Pathway aims to address these challenges by assisting providers in making informed decisions, potentially reducing unnecessary costs and improving patient care.

The HEART Pathway assists healthcare providers in determining whether patient admission for stress testing is necessary or if discharge from the Emergency Room is appropriate. Notably, this tool helps assess the likelihood of a patient's presenting symptoms being indicative of ACS and the probability of an ACS event occurring within 30 days.
